10 members of the TIS IB class of 2017 are coming together to build a library in the Central Region of Ghana in a farming community called, Assin Ochiso. Heritage Academy is a missionary school with which our patron and school counsellor, Clara Burgess, has been collaborating since 2009. With approximately 400 pupils from KG 1 to JHS 3, the school is in need of basic materials, such as books, uniforms, furniture and stationaries. Partnering with an organization in Canada – ‘Book Matters’ – we have received over 1,000 books for the library. Spearheaded by our group leaders Nii Odartey-Wellington, David Gbate and Salim Yakubu (TIS IB class of 2017), we have started an extensive collection of library books for the Assin Ochiso within the TIS community and our family and friends. A fundraiser will be organized in order to secure these necessary supplies, while we also appeal to the TIS community to provide used classroom materials for the students. These will facilitate a good learning space for the children in the Heritage Academy.
Any form of assistance will go a long way in helping us to promote literacy skills in the deprived communities in Ghana.
