The ‘A’ Project is a CAS project initiated by me, Ama Eduwa Andah. The project aims at creating awareness on the disease in the school community and helping underprivileged communities. I decided to embark on this journey because I believe students of TIS have more to learn about the disease and what to do in emergency scenarios. I would also like to close the gaps in asthma care by raising funds to supply medical resources to underprivileged health institutions.
What is Asthma?
Asthma is a common lung disorder characterized by episodes of coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. Asthma is caused by inflammation of the lining of the small airways in the lungs (bronchioles) which leads to spasm or narrowing of these tubes. (Asthma and Spirometry, La Crosse). The symptom of Asthma includes chest tightness or pain, wheezing, coughing etc. There are also numerous triggers including: emotion, exercise, pollen, smoke etc. (CDC, 2020)
Awareness
I plan on creating awareness by inviting a medical professional/ healthcare provider to give advice on the disease. This session will include emergency response tips, myth-busting, a fun Q&A session and much more. Hopefully, this will take place next semester and you don’t want to miss it! There will also be exciting asthma-related educational videos projected during the meals, to inform people about the disease and demystify around the disease.
I would also implore students to help raise awareness about the disease by sharing whatever credible information they have on the disease with others.
Donation Plans
Apart from raising awareness, I also hope to raise FUNDS. I intend on selling stylish badges, stickers, and shirts to generate money. In addition, pledge cards will be going around for anyone that wants to help people suffering from asthma. This money will be used to purchase nebulizers and inhalers for under-funded and under-privileged local clinics that may have outdated machinery or no machinery at all.
So, stick around for updates and let’s help ‘Close the Gaps in Asthma Care’
